POP or IMAP Settings for Faculty/Staff

NOTE FOR OFF CAMPUS USE: Most internet providers have restricted the outgoing mail settings to their servers only. Contact your local internet provider to find out how to send mail via SMTP on their network, if the GVSU SMTP setting below does not work.

The information you need for setup is below.  The procedure for your device will vary.

Requirements:
  • Email client that uses IMAP or POP for retrieving messages
  • Network connection to the internet (wired or wireless)

IMAP E-Mail

Features:
  • Messages will remain on the server and when deleted they are removed from both client and the server.
  • You can create local folders for storage of messages, that are not kept on server
  • You will have access to Cabinet folders on GroupWise server

Settings:

When indicated fill in the blanks as follows:
Account Type: Select IMAP
Account Name: Arbitrary but GVSU IMAP or GroupWise IMAP is best
Email address: Type your address (i.e. doej@gvsu.edu)
Full Name: Type your name in the box (i.e. John Doe)

Incoming Mail Server:  imap.gwise.gvsu.edu
User name: Must be exact username that is in GroupWise
Password:  Type in your GroupWise password
Outgoing Mail Server
: smtp.gwise.gvsu.edu

NOTE: Our server does require Authentication using your username and password.

Special Settings:
Many clients can change when Deleted messages are removed from the server. These are set to when ever you want but Remember: once a message is removed using IMAP, it may show in your client but it is not on the GroupWise Server anymore.

POP E-Mail

Features:
  • At the setup of the account, you have the option of either getting copies of new email messages (leaves messages on server) or retrieving original messages (removing all read messages from the server). With the former, you will have to periodically go onto the GroupWise web based email to remove messages even after you removed them in the client.
  • You can create local folders for storage of messages, that may or may not be kept on server
  • The client will NOT have access to Cabinet folders on GroupWise server

Settings:

When indicated fill in the blanks as follows:

Account Type: Select POP  (or POP3)
Account Name: Arbitrary but GVSU POP or GroupWise POP is best
Email address: Type your address (i.e. doej@gvsu.edu)
Full Name: Type your name in the box (i.e. John Doe)
Incoming Mail Server:  pop.gwise.gvsu.edu
User name: Must be exact username that is in GroupWise
Password:  Type in your GroupWise password
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gwise.gvsu.edu

NOTE: Our server does require Authentication using your username and password.

ise.
