Damon Arnold, PhD

Director, Student Services for Laker Academics

In addition to working full time as the Director for Academic Services in Grand Valley State's Athletic Department, Damon has taught numerous classes at the University.

He holds an A.A. in Behavior Science (Citrus Community College), a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology (Chico State University), as well as an M.S. in Sports Psychology (University of Idaho). Damon also received his Ph.D. in Education Administration (Washington State University).  As you can tell from his educational accomplishments, Damon truly believes in life-long learning.

It is his goal to inspire his student-athletes to confidence in all situations, by encouraging education to inspire a generation. He wants to help young men and women understand that correct decisions and choices are an important part of life.

Alicia Adell

Academic Advisor

Alicia works full-time as an academic adviser in the L.A.K.E.R. Academic Success Center. She also works on the Life Skills program for student-athletes. She received her B.S in 2005 from GVSU in Public Relations. She then went on to receive her M.Ed in 2007 in College Student Affairs Leadership. Alicia is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the students she works with.

Abby Johnson

Graduate Assistant- Life Skills

Abby is a first year graduate student in the College Student Affairs Leadership Program. She graduated from Michigan State University in the spring of 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy. Abby coordinates the Athletes Who Care Program, assists with the Life Skills presentation series and Student Athlete Study Tables, creates the monthly newsletter, and serves as academic advisor for the softball team. She is excited to be a part of the LAKER Academic Success Center team!


DeAnna Poland

Graduate Assistant- Academic Advisor

DeAnna is a first year graduate student in the College Student Affairs Leadership program. She comes to Grand Valley from New Jersey where she grew up. She attended Rutgers University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Labor Relations. While attending Rutgers she ran track doing hurdles and long jump. DeAnna will be working as an Academic Advisor this year working with track, cross country, and volleyball students. DeAnna enjoys working out, board games, and sports in her free time. She hopes to work in Collegiate Athletics upon graduation. DeAnna is looking forward to an exciting year in the LAKER Academic Success Center.

Laura McCulley

Graduate Intern- Academic Advisor

Laura is a second year graduate student in the College Student Affairs Leadership (CSAL) program. Laura works in Housing and Residence Life as an Assistant Living Center Director for 2 Living centers on campus. She graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 2011 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. Laura will be interning as an Academic Advisor in the LAKER Academic Succcess Center in this year and will be working with the Lacrosse team.  Laura is excited about this opportunity and looks forward to working with student athletes.

Jennifer McGraw

Graduate Intern- Study Skills Specialist

Jenny is a graduate student in the School of Social Work. She graduated from Michigan State University in August 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Family Community Services. She previously was an academic mentor for student-athletes at the University of Memphis and sincerely enjoys working in athletics. At the LAKER Academic Success Center, Jenny will be providing academic support to student-athletes focusing on study skill development. She is also the assistant tutorial coordinator and Sunday night study table monitor. Additionally, Jenny holds a research fellowship position at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy. She is very excited to be a part of the Academic Success Center team and is looking forward to working with the GVSU Lakers!

Rachel Gladstone

Graduate Intern- Academic Advisor

Rachel is a 2nd year graduate student in the College Student Affairs Leadership program. She works in the Movement Science Department for the Sport Leadership Program doing event planning, student advising and teaching. Rachel graduated from GVSU is a Bachelor’s in Sport Management. While interning at the LAKER Academic Center, she will be working with Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams as well as supervising Study Tables.
