Legal Resources

Having a legal question or needing an attorney to represent you can be a challenging process. Finding the correct type of attorney, someone who is able to represent you well, that you trust and is in the area may begin with a simple search or referal. Here are some preliminary resources that may be available if you are in need of legal assistance.

Legal Assistance Center

The mission of the Legal Assistance Center (LAC) is to help persons who choose to represent themselves in court. After assessing each patron's particular circumstances LAC staff will explain the legal options and procedures. Court forms and instructions are available at the LAC, along with informational flyers about numerous legal issues. On site notary and copy services also assist patrons in preparing required court documents.

Michigan Legal Aid

MichiganLegalAid.org provides help with legal problems to low income residents of Michigan. On this site you will find information about the law and about places to go for help with legal and related problems.

Legal Aid of Western Michigan

Legal Services Corporation funded agencies in Western Michigan have provided free legal assistance to low income persons and Seniors in non-criminal, non-fee generating matters. Legal Aid of Western Michigan currently serves people in 17 counties in the lower Western part of Michigan with offices in Big Rapids, Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Niles and St. Joseph.            

The attorneys at Legal Aid of Western Michigan provide a full range of legal assistance to eligible clients.  Services include:

  • Counsel and advice--including telephone intake, advice &  brief service;
  • Representation in cases with administrative agencies
  • Representation in Michigan Courts.

In addition, the program has a long history of community partnerships addressing the needs of low income, Seniors, persons with handicaps, and Domestic Violence survivors.
