The First Year Leadership Experience (FYLE) is designed to assist newer leaders in creating and enhancing their personal philosophy of leadership while developing basic leadership skills and learning about all of the leadership opportunities that the GVSU community has to offer. All first year and transfer students are encouraged to be a part of this program, especially those who are interested in future leadership roles. FYLE teaches leadership through interactive activities and discussion led by upperclassmen student leaders and staff from across campus. This is a great way to get acquainted with leadership in a college setting. The completion of the FYLE will make you a strong candidate for future leadership positions, as well as prepare you to take your next steps as an intermediate leader on campus.
The First Year Leadership Experience (FYLE) program consists of five sessions from held once a week on Mondays from 6:00 - 8:30 PM on GVSU's Allendale campus (Kirkhof Center 2263) during the fall semester. Attendance at all sessions is required to be considered a FYLE graduate.
Week 1: Exploring Leadership, Team Building, Meet Mentor Group
Week 2: Values Clarticiation, Ethical Leadership
Week 3: Diversity education & Inclusive leadership
Week 4: Personality type*, group dynamics, & Goal Setting (*True Colors- see below)
Week 5: Commitment into action, networking, celebration and empowerment
If you are a graduate of FYLE and/or an upperclassmen (must have completed at least one semster at GVSU), learn more about serving as a FYLE Facilitator.
*True Colors(R) is a human relations tool that provides the keys to personal success. Based on the work of Dr. Carl Jung, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Dr. David Keirsey and Don Lowry, it helps you to understand what motivates behavior in people with different personalities. Presented in a fun, interactive self-discovery format, True Colors provides a basis for communication that overcomes obstacles to clear communication, improves collaboration, and increases learning. http://www.personalitypathways.com/
