Hot Topics for Educators series - Summer 2014

The Hot Topics for Educators series is now offering courses and workshops which allow educators to receive State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) or university academic credit. It's your choice! 

In order to receive the academic conversion rate for SCECHs, you must complete all assignments as if you are taking the class for academic credit. See syllabus for each class for evaluation requirements.

Today’s teachers are faced with a large number of students with a wide range of Physical, Emotional, Neurological and Psychological Disabilities.  Together we will explore a wide variety of disabilities and their impact upon brain growth & development, emotional development and learning.  This class is designed to help you understand disabilities deeper.  You will leave with a better understanding of a wide range of disabilities and a host of research and experience based strategies so that you are better equipped to deal with the students who come into your room each year.  Students in the class will help direct the agenda.  We will discuss the most common disabilities along with those that participants want to know more about.

Understanding the Asperger Mind
Kelly Keur

This course will give an in depth study of the complex minds of individuals with Aspergers syndrome. We will address classroom accommodations and strategies to help connect with children in your classroom that have this diagnosis. We will also look at the challenges that families face in having children with Aspergers. This course will include information such as the diagnostic criteria using the DSM5, intervention techniques, as well as the gifts and challenges of Aspergers syndrome.

Modeling Effective Comprehension Strategies through Book Talks

This course will demonstrate ways to use multiple interactive strategies to help students develop effective comprehension skills in their everyday reading. A variety of activities will be shared for modeling these skills with students. Root of Violent Behaviors in Children and Teens

In this 30 hour course, we will dissect the causes of violent behaviors in children and teens. We will be discussing the impact that prenatal care and the first two critical years have on the later emotional growth in children. Topics will include the impact of emotional deprivation, abuse and neglect, the effects of maternal depression, early brain development and looking at the anti-social outcomes of negative experiences in the first 33 months of life. Once we understand the roots of violent behaviors we can begin to explore ways to work with these children and families.

Tuition Cost

  • Graduate tuition rate effective for the 2014 summer semester is $562 per credit hour for Michigan residents.

 GVSU Network Account Information

  • Your Network Account provides access to all GVSU computer labs, GVSU student email and Blackboard.
  • If you do not know your network account name, log in to MyBanner with your student ID and pin. Click on Personal Information, then GVSU Network Account Password Reset. Your network login will be shown and you will have a chance to reset your password if you have forgotten it.
  • If you are taking an online class for SCECHs, you will be sent a username and password from the Hot Topics for Educators office to use for your account access to Blackboard. This will be different from any GVSU student network IDs.
