Teaching and Classroom Support
The Libraries will offer full liaison librarian services in multiple modes with consideration of the health and wellness of students, teaching faculty, and liaisons during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our focus will be on the best learning experience for students. All instruction librarians will adhere to campus policies around face coverings, vaccinations, and social distancing. Since a single liaison is the main point of contact for hundreds of students and faculty with their liaison assignments, liaisons will be intentional about the modality of their interactions.
All core liaison services will be available both in-person and virtual formats, as permissible by the university and local health codes. Liaisons will offer:
- Instruction (synchronously and asynchronously) about library and information literacy concepts and strategies
- Consultations about research with students and faculty
- Materials to support curricula
- Collaborations with teaching faculty to support assignment design that integrates information literacy
- Consultations about scholarly communications
Liaisons will offer these services in-person and virtually using a variety of tools including, but not limited to: Blackboard, Zoom, Google Meet, Library Guides, Blackboard Collaborate, videos (using Panopto or Camtasia), Jamboard, tutorials, email, handouts, and slide presentations.
Liaisons provide research consultations with students, which are a powerful point-of-need venue for student learning. Virtual options and in-person consultations will be available. Please contact your liaison librarian to make arrangements.

Liaison librarians are the primary link between academic departments and the library. Every academic program on campus has a dedicated liaison librarian, and every librarian is a GVSU faculty member. They are your advocates and partners in supporting student success.
How do the Libraries approach teaching?
In the Grand Valley State University Libraries, we teach information literacy in order to support students, faculty, staff, and the GVSU community as they learn and teach while using information in any of its forms. What are some examples of library instructional support?
In addition to direct support from your liaison librarian, University Libraries offers many other programs and services to support faculty teaching and learning. Here are a few examples:
Copyright & Fair Use in Teaching: The Libraries' Copyright Guide provides information about copyright for educators and students, including fair use, as well as resources for finding content that is free to use in teaching.
Open Educational Resources: Use our Open Educational Resources subject guide to find high-quality open-licensed textbooks and other educational materials for your courses.
Subject Guides: Share our collection of subject and course guides to help your students find discipline-specific library materials. These guides can be embedded into your syllabus or Blackboard course.
Video and Interactive Tutorials: Librarians have created several creative learning modules to information literacy competency, which you can embed in your Blackboard site.
