Checklist for McNair Program Eligibility

1._________________ You want to receive a Ph.D. and plan on going to graduate school immediately after finishing at GVSU.

2._________________ You are a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.

3._________________ You have a GPA of 2.8 or higher if you are a sophomore,
OR
You have a GPA of 3.0 or higher if you are a junior.

4._________________ You are a first-generation college student (meaning that you grew up in a household where neither parent has completed a four-year degree) and you are a low-income student.
OR
You are part of an ethnic minority that is underrepresented in Ph.D. programs (African-American, Hispanic, Native American or Native Alaskan).

If you can answer “yes” to all four of the above points, you should contact the McNair office as early in your undergraduate program as possible. In order to be eligible for summer research, you must have another year before you graduate. For more information, you can reach Associate Director Dolli Lutes via phone at (616) 331-3441 or via e-mail at lutesd@gvsu.edu.

If you answer “no” to any of the above points, it is not likely that you are eligible for the program.  Other programs you may be interested in include Student Summer Scholars.
