CMENC
What is CMENC?
CMENC is the collegiate chapter of the music education organization MENC: Music Educators National Conference. The name was changed in 1998 to MENC: The National Association for Music Education to associate more with the organizations mission. There are collegiate chapters all over the country and we have our own here at Grand Valley State University.
What does CMENC do?
The purpose of this organization is to educate students in the area of music education. Activities and events are conducted to advance that knowledge and give the ability to get to know others who are interested in the same area as you. It prepares not only music teachers, but music advocates of all kinds.
Who can join CMENC and then how do I join?
Anyone who is a music education major, music performance major, music major or minor of any form, any education major or anyone who is interested in advocating music. Anyone who loves music and wants to see all types of music education thrive can join. After you have decided that this is an organization for you, check out our boards around the performing arts center or find a board member to fill out an application and pay your due.
What does the GVSU chapter do?
Some of the activities we have done in the past are holiday parties, music education panels, conferences, concerts, teacher and faculty panels, instrument petting zoos, instrument repair clinics, fundraising events and an end of the year banquet. We are planning on providing those and even more activities that will help increase your knowledge and enjoyment of music and music education. Watch for posters and signs in the Performing Arts Center that tell what events and activities are coming up. We also have monthly meetings that share all of our planed events, talk about our past successes and help run activities and events held throughout the year. You will also receive a monthly MENC journal in the mail just for being a member.
Our goal as an organization is to help prepare you to teach and/or appreciate music at a higher level, increase music appreciation in area schools and for you to be able to learn from and get to know others who have the same interest in music you do.
