Samuel Gould holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance from Michigan State University. Currently, he teaches courses in Music
Literature at Grand Valley State University and Applied Percussion at Grand Rapids Community College.
As a percussionist, Dr. Gould performs in a wide variety of musical settings ranging from orchestral to popular music. As an orchestral percussionist he has performed with the: Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Midland Symphony Orchestra, Jackson Symphony Orchestra, West Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Kalamazoo Bach Festival Orchestra. He has also served as a modern dance accompanist at Grand Valley State University and Michigan State University. In addition to this work Dr. Gould currently performs with his own group Dziro, a group dedicated to performing traditional mbira music from Zimbabwe. His recorded work can be heard on Innova Records, Ghostly International and Quite Scientific Records.
Dr. Gould’s research interests include: the music of sub-Sahraran Africa, Frame
Drumming traditions around the world and Performance-Based pedagogy in the
classroom. He has also sought out additional study with master musicians: Valerie
Naranjo, Erica Azim, Francis Kofi, Ba-ere Yotere and Caution Shonhai.
