University Bands

Grand Valley State University bands invite you to look us over!

Band is a rewarding, exciting organization of both music and non-music majors. Quality instruction, with an emphasis on superb performance, is the focus at Grand Valley State University. There is an ensemble for every interested Grand Valley University student. Over 300 students participate in one of our 3 concert bands and 3 athletic bands.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble  Music 112 01 - 1 credit
The Grand Valley State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the most select concert organization at the university. The ensemble is comprised of the finest performers on campus. Students who are interested in this group must audition with specific audition excerpts on the Sunday before classes start or the first day of classes of the Fall semester.

Concert Band  Music 102 01- 1 credit
The Concert Band is a select band that seeks to develop aesthetic sensitivity, musical knowledge and ensemble performance skills through the study and performance of traditional and contemporary works from the wind band repertoire. Auditions are open to all Grand Valley students and are required for admittance into the ensemble. Auditions are held the first two days of classes each semester.

University Band  Music 102 02- 1 credit 
In keeping with the great tradition of university bands, the University Band performs quality standard band literature. Designed specifically for the non-major, The University Band meets during the winter semester only and is open to all students.  No audition is required for participation in this band.  The University Band presents a concert at the end of the semester.  All GVSU students are encouraged to continue music-making in this musically rewarding environment.

Laker Marching Band  Music 107 011 - Free credit
The Grand Valley State University Marching Band is one of the largest and most active organizations on campus. The band performs during the fall semester for all home games, one overnight away game and professional football games. With the success of the football program, the Marching Band has performed in numerous playoff games, including three National Championship games in Florence, Alabama. In addition, the energetic style, unique formations and creative musical arrangements, the Marching band is frequently featured at band festivals and competitions. Each member of the band must attend band camp.

ALL MEMBERS OF THE MARCHING BAND WILL RECEIVE A $100 PERFORMANCE AWARD for the successful completion of the season.

Auditions are required for colorguard members and percussionists. All other members audition for section placement only.

Basketball Pep Band  MUS 111 01 - 1 credit
The Basketball Pep Bands perform at all men's and women's home basketball games and NCAA payoff games. Enrollment is by audition and subject to space availability. For information, contact the band office at the beginning of fall semester. Students are paid $15 per performance.
