Black History Month Celebration is the celebration of the history, culture, traditions and contributions of African Americans. The celebration is recognized every February.

The Blackout: Black Student Organization Showcase

Film Screening: Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah: FBI informant William O'Neal infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton. A career thief, O'Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell. Hampton's political prowess grows just as he's falling in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson. Meanwhile, a battle wages for O'Neal's soul. Will he align with the forces of good? Or subdue Hampton and The Panthers by any means, as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover commands?

For the Culture: Quiz Bowl

Flex your Black history and culture knowledge, snag some amazing prizes, and enjoy food from around the world!

In collaboration with the GVSU African & African American Studies program, For the Culture Quiz Bowl is a tournament-style trivia event focused on Black history and culture from around the world. Topics include history, language, geography, politics, pop culture, and more. Don't worry - you'll get a study guide as soon as you register.

Everyone is invited to participate and enjoy locally-catered foods representing the Black diaspora.

You can register as a team, or register as an individual and be placed onto a team.

Teams must include 3 people and can be comprised of faculty, staff, and students. Each team must have a least 1 current GVSU student (graduate or undergraduate).

Taste of Soul

Thursday, February 29, 2024 - 2:00pm-4:00pm

Location: Kirkhof Center – Lobby

Join us to share in the deep Southern, African-American tradition of soul food. This style of cooking originated when African Americans, enslaved, were given the leftover scraps. With the items that were available, a variety of wholesome dishes were created. Come try a sample of the dishes we know as soul food.
