School of Computing hosts the first cybersecurity boot camp at GVSU

On Saturday March 30th, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Allendale campus, Dr. Samah Mansour, Assistant Professor at the GVSU School of Computing, hosted the first cybersecurity boot camp for the members of the Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore.

The primary objective of the boot camp was to introduce 4th and 5th-graders to diverse cybersecurity concepts through fun and interactive activities that would prepare them to become qualified digital citizens capable of protecting themselves in the cyber domain. Participants also had the opportunity to earn badges in cybersecurity.

The GVSU School of Computing started a visionary outreach initiative to integrate cybersecurity into K-12 school curricula and collaborated with organizations such as the Girl Scouts to host boot camps. Through these efforts, they aim to empower girls with valuable skills and knowledge that can open up exciting career opportunities in the growing and evolving cybersecurity field with the hope of closing the gender gap and addressing the workforce shortage.

"This event is the first cybersecurity Girl Scout boot camp at GVSU," Dr. Mansour said. "We plan to extend similar opportunities to girls across different age groups in collaboration with the Girl Scout team.”
