Scholarships and Loans

Financial Aid

F-1 international students are generally not eligible for financial aid in the way that domestic students are, since financial aid awards are made on the basis of the FAFSA form for U.S. Citizens and permanent residents. However, you may be eligible for the scholarships and loans referenced below.

Full-time Status

For immigration purposes, international students on either J-1 or F-1 visas must be enrolled as full-time students. Full-time enrollment for undergraduates is 12 credits per term (though most undergraduates average 15 credits per term). Full-time enrollment for graduate students is 9 credits per term. Any exceptions to this must be cleared by the appropriate academic advisor and GVSU’s Director of International Student & Scholar Services, since those exceptions must be reported to U.S. Immigration.

On-Campus Scholarships

All F-1 International Students that have completed 12 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits at GVSU are eligible to apply for scholarships.  Information will be mailed to students in February. Students submit an application to a committee chaired by the Director of International Students and Scholars Services. Any questions should be directed to Kate Stoetzner, stoetznk@gvsu.edu

Off-Campus Scholarships

There are many opportunities pertaining to private scholarships and grants. You will find the following websites helpful when researching alternative sources of funding.

Loans
There are loans available for international students on F-1 visas. The following are organizations that service international student loans.
