Tafel Recognized for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Heather Tafel, Associate Professor of Political Science and Interim Director of the International Relations Program, was awarded a Pew Teaching Excellence Award at the annual GVSU Faculty Honors Convocation on February 15, 2024. The award, given by the Provost’s office and the Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center, honors faculty who demonstrate a commitment to student learning as instructor and positive influence on career development of students, and who stimulate intellectual curiosity in their students. Professor Tafel cites the guiding principles of relevance, active student involvement, high standards, and support in her teaching endeavors. Her commitment to active learning is evident in her dynamic teaching methods, fostering engaging classroom environments where students analyze current events, discuss research articles, and apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations. Professor Tafel’s distinct combination of challenging while also supporting students creates a classroom atmosphere full of energy and curiosity. Colleagues and students highlight her generosity with time and materials, as well as her leadership in student scholarship.
