Leestma Awarded Boren Scholarship

David Leestma of Grand Rapids is the recipient of a 2014 National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarship to learn Arabic in Jordan during the 2014-15 academic year. He is of on 175 applicants from a pool of 868 applications nationwide awarded this prestigious scholarship. Leestma is an international relations major with minors in Arabic and Middle East Studies.  Leestma joins a growing number of GVSU students to receive this nationally competitive award.

David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), a major federal initiative designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills. Boren Awards provide U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to the future security and stability of the U.S. In exchange for funding, Boren award recipients agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year. 

GVSU students interested in the Boren Awards are encouraged to contact Amanda Cuevas, director of the Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships, 230 Mary Idema Pew Library, (616) 331-2699 to discuss the award application process. The application for the 2015-2016 academic year will open in mid-August 2014 and the campus deadline will be in early December 2014.
