Aaron Lowen

Dr. Aaron Lowen is an Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs in the Office of the Provost, and a Professor of Economics in the Seidman College of Business. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Northern Iowa, and his doctorate in Economics from the University of Iowa. Aaron joined GVSU in August 2003.

Prior to serving in the Office of the Provost, Dr. Lowen served as chair of the Economics Department, the Director of the School of Accounting, and the Department of Finance in the Seidman College of Business. He has also served as a Presidential Fellow in the area of Enterprise Learning under GVSU President Philomena Mantella. He has a passion for connecting learners with the communities we serve, including through facilitating community-based learning projects, supporting mentoring and internship programs, and partnering with external advisory boards.

Dr. Lowen’s research includes a wide range of economic- and policy-based topics, including estimating the effects of Title IX legislation on women's economic and health outcomes, the impact of legalizing same-sex adoption on labor force outcomes, the long-term impacts of community-based learning on students and faculty, and the economic implications of Michigan’s recent reform of no-fault auto insurance. He has received a Pew Teaching Excellence Award, an Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award from the GVSU Graduate Student Association, and the GVSU Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award.
