The RMSC Welcomes a New Director!

Herrington tapped to lead restructured CLAS center

A former chair of the GVSU Chemistry Department will lead the restructured College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Center for Experiential Learning (CCEL), which now also houses the Regional Math and Science Center.

Deborah Herrington, professor of chemistry, is the new director of CCEL which serves as a resource supporting university experiential learning objectives,

Herrington has been at GVSU for 21 years, distinguishing herself in her work on science and chemistry education at both the K-12 level as well as for higher education curricula.

Announcing the 2024 Dockeray Scholarship Winners

Two Mary Jane Dockeray Scholarships have been awarded for 2024. The scholarships are granted to graduating seniors from Kent, Ottawa, or Muskegon counties who plan to pursue a career in the sciences. The scholarships are offered in honor of the late Dr. Mary Jane Dockeray, founding curator of the Blandford Nature Center in Grand Rapids, through the Regional Math and Science Center.  This year's winners are Sophie Meyer and Paige Schuiling.

Michigan Science Olympiad: Support students and foster their love for science!

Now more than ever students are looking for ways to connect and belong. Schools are looking for ways to help students explore STEM careers. One way to support students that are passionate about science is to create a Science Olympiad team and compete in the Region 12 Science Olympiad Tournament!

Math in Action - Save the Date and Call for Presenters

This conference presents lively and informative discussions of current issues in Pre-K to 12 mathematics education. We provide opportunities for practicing teachers, prospective teachers, curriculum directors, and college and university faculty to share ideas, concerns, and resources. Math in Action includes keynotes and hour-long sessions with multiple interactive presentations on specific mathematical topics.

The West Michigan PBL Summit empowers educators to return to their schools equipped with fresh ideas, a supportive network, and the motivation to implement powerful PBL experiences for their students.  The keynote speaker is John Spencer, former middle school teacher and current full-time professor, who is passionate about seeing teachers empower their students with voice and choice.

Michigan Statistics Poster Competition: 2024 Winners Announced and 2025 Competition Kicks Off!

The Michigan Statistics Poster Competition supports the development of data analysis and communication skills in K-12 students, which are essential in our increasingly data-driven world.  Annually, teachers throughout Michigan send hundreds of their students' posters to GVSU where they are in four grade-level categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

Celebrate National Chemistry Week with Chemistry at the Mall!

Families and the community are invited to participate in hands-on events activities to celebrate chemistry and health at Woodland Mall on Saturday October 26, 11am-3pm.There will be booths by local colleges and chemistry related companies. It is all FREE and open to the public.
