Level 0-Teacher gives step-by-step instruction.
-Teacher is unprepared for questions, time management, problems.
1. Teacher would be sitting at desk while students are working 2. Students are not involved — “off task”-Teachers do not have students share their processTeacher does not select groups of students to present in any specific order; All student groups present solutions to classmates; No discussion; No connections being made; Misconceptions are not addressed; There is 'one best' way to solve the problem.Students work independently without discussion. Level 1-Teacher only considers correct answers in their anticipating.
-Teacher directs the discussion instead of students influencing direction of discussion.
1. Teacher is walking around and listening 2. Students are attempting the problem-Teachers allow students to share in a voluntary, 'show and tell' methodTeacher chooses the best solution to present to the class.
Teachers then ask for volunteers to present if they would like.
Teacher discusses the solutions - no student participation.
The teacher is making the connections for the students. Students are working independently, with some group work.

Level 2-Answers given by students lack follow-up.
-Teacher does some directing of the discussion but allows students to direct it as well.
1. Teacher is either recording or asking questions (not both) 2. Several/most of the students are engaged and have attempted the problem-Teachers select some student work but allow other students to share intermixedMultiple approaches are presented without purpose to the order.

The teacher is prompting connections, but students are adding to the discussions and making connections. Students collaborate in small groups

Level 3-Students are actively thinking and are guided by the teacher.
-Teacher anticipates possible correct and incorrect solutions.
1. Teacher is walking around, discussing with each group and asking questions 2. Students are on task and engaged-Teachers select students to share their work in an organized manner that builds to allow students to make connections and meet the goal of the lesson.The order of the presentations is clearly defined with purpose, based on the goal of the lesson
Students are making connections between the different solution paths
Students are critiquing and analyzing the work of others.
Students work cooperatively. Students organize their work into justified presentations, and make connections between each other's work during discussion. Teacher monitors, guides, and asks extending questions to which students respond.
