Power Study Techniques
Most students know that in order to get good grades, outside study time is important. What many students don't know is what to do to make that study time effective. At our Power Study Hour Workshop, we will share "The Power Hour" study techniques that will help you focus your study time so that you learn more and spend less time staring at your book wondering where to begin.
Textbook Reading Strategies
Having effective reading strategies is a key component to your academic success at GVSU. Much of the material you will need to know will come directly from your course readings and textbooks. Effective reading is much more than just simply reading the assigned chapters. Come to our workshop to learn active reading strategies and how to become a “college reading scholar.”
Tips for Taking Great Notes
Much of the information that is presented in class often contains key concepts likely to be included on exams. Yet, many students struggle with how to listen and take purposeful and meaningful notes in class. Come to our workshop to find out note-taking strategies that will help you be able to better identify key concepts from course lectures and create a note-taking system that works for you.
From Procrastination to Motivation
If procrastination is getting in the way of your academic success, this workshop will help you identify your source of procrastination and learn strategies to increase your motivation to get your work done. We can't motivate you - but you can! We will discuss action steps that you can take to turn your procrastination into motivation and your self-doubt into self-confidence.
Time Management – Tips for Taking Control
Balancing personal, professional, and academic commitments, along with spending time with family and friends can be a challenge. Developing your own system of organization and time management will help you be in control of your life and learning. You will assess your current approach to time management and identify strategies that you can put in place immediately to help you achieve your goals and improve your effectiveness.
Managing Anxiety and Stress about Tests
Tests can cause stress and anxiety levels to rise, even in the very best students. Test anxiety occurs when your feelings of anxiety interfere with your ability to recall previously learned information during a testing situation. Students will assess their own level of anxiety and identify strategies to deal with the stress that comes with taking tests. Campus resources will be shared.
Technology Apps that can help you Succeed
Did you know that there are Apps that can help you study? Come to our workshop to find out about free Apps that can help make learning easier for you. Be sure to bring your laptop, i-pad, or smart phone device to try them out!
Using Technology for Great Presentations
Do you have presentations that you are working on this semester? Are you interested in learning how to integrate technology into your presentations such as creating PowerPoint animations and designing Prezis? If you said yes, then come to our workshop tonight on Using Technology for Great Presentations. Remember to bring your laptop (if you have one), or any presentation you are working on with you.
Learning Preferences and Study Strategies
Understanding your own way of taking information in and processing it is key to making the best use of your time and energy both in the classroom and during outside study time. Identify your unique learning preference and learn study strategies that will make you a more effective and satisfied learner. The key is to study smarter, not harder.
A Final Exam Plan for Low Stress and High Success
Procrastination may be your middle name, but don’t wait until a week (or a few days) before the final to begin your preparation! At this workshop, we will discuss test-taking tips and strategies specifically relating to final exams. Final exams can cause stress and anxiety levels to rise, even in the very best students. Come and identify strategies to deal with the stress that comes with taking tests.
