The Future Alumni Association and Laker for a Lifetime is hosting "GVS{You} Week". From now until February 21, you will see flyers/banners with cool facts about the scope and impact of private gifts of support for Grand Valley. If you have a couple minutes to spare on Thursday from 11am-4pm in Kirkhof, YOU will have the opportunity to write thank you notes to the donors for their support. These notes will be mailed out the next week.

The Michigan Community Service Commission is eager to receive your nomination for one of eight awards to be presented in various categories reflecting the true diversity of volunteers in our state. Check out the 2013 Governor's Service Awards Nominator Tip Sheet located online.  This Tip Sheet provides 10 helpful hints when developing and submitting a nomination for the 2013 Governor's Service Awards. We think you'll find it useful as you venture in to this process.



As a reminder, five finalists in each category, including the winner, will be recognized at the Governor's Service Awards celebration this summer.

Grand Valley State University was announced as the winner of the College Kettle Challenge for raising $1,604.52 for The Salvation Army by ringing bells this past Christmas! The College Kettle Cup is a traveling trophy created by Aquinas College student Jade Chavez. Other college students that were involved in this competition include Aquinas College and Davenport University. Together, students from these three colleges rang bells for 111 hours and raised $3,346.50 for The Salvation Army!

HealthCorps, a comprehensive health education program founded and developed by host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” heart surgeon, and bestselling author Mehmet Oz, is seeking dynamic, proactive, and engaging individuals to teach its school curriculum and coordinate community health education events. Coordinators will be a part of a national initiative launched in response to a drastic decline in the health of our nation.


 




Job Description:


Each Coordinator works with an individual school to develop a tailored edition of HealthCorps, ensuring that the needs of the school community are met. Coordinators teach daily classroom lessons based on the HealthCorps Curriculum, organize and facilitate after school programming, provide staff and parent outreach and hold school-wide and community-wide events. The mission of HealthCorps is to implement an innovative in-school model that inspires teens to make healthier choices for themselves and their families.

HealthCorps will have a table in the Kirkhof Center on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. and will be at the Career Fair the following day (February 21, 2013 at the DeVos Place Convention Center from 1-5 p.m.). They will also be interviewing qualified candidates in DeVos from 8:30 a.m. – 2:15 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2013.

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to nominate a student who has demonstrated a commitment to gender justice.  This may include impacting the lives of women and/or girls through service-learning, engaging in advocacy and/or social justice activities, creating a project or program that impacts gender equity, etc.  




All materials must be submitted to the Women’s Center, 1201 Kirkhof Center by Monday, February 18th by 5 p.m.

When asked to give a bio about herself, and her history with service, Rachel said, 

"I went on a mission trip to Dominican Republic. While I was there I helped build a house for a large family, clean and paint a school for disabilities and helped out in two local orphanages. I have also been a camp counselor for four years, volunteered at Sparrow Hospital and worked many blood drives. 

I hope to get involved with community service learning here at Grand Valley. I love volunteering and helping people out. I hope to help out with upcoming blood drives and possibly go on an alternative spring break trip."

The CSLC is taking a group of students to Lansing on Friday, October 5, for a state-wide conference called Active Leaders Student Conference hosted by Michigan Campus Compact. This event will prepare college students to be change agents for the issues about which they are passionate! Transportation will be provided by the CSLC and breakfast and lunch are included in the conference.   E-mail Valerie Jones (jonesval@gvsu.edu) asap if you are interested in attending! Include your tshirt size, any dietary restrictions, audio/visual needs, and the group you are representing (if any.  ie- student organization).

Active Leaders Student Conference serves as an excellent opportunity for students to develop leadership skills to engage in service initiatives beginning on their campus.



Keynote Speaker  

Amber Cruz is Program Manager for Mobilize.org, working to develop programming and provide support for summit award winners in the fellowship program. She became a member of the team in September 2010. Prior to joining Mobilize.org, Cruz worked in finance and development for a non-profit organization, managing their events and PAC contributions. She came to Washington, D.C. in January 2010 with three years of event planning experience at a private event planning company in Oregon, where she planned a variety of events, including conferences and non-profit fundraisers. Cruz has also interned with several political campaigns and state representatives in both Ore. and Wash. In 2008, she worked with the finance team and later as a field organizer for Senator Jeff Merkley. Amber brings to Mobilize.org her belief in the power of Millennials to make a difference through innovative, grassroots solutions. Cruz holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics from Willamette University in Oregon. She enjoys lending her fundraising and event planning expertise to women's organizations in Washington, D.C.

The Sustainability Initiative of Grand Valley is seeking volunteers for the university's first zero waste football game.  On Saturday October 20, the Lakers play Northwood and students are signing on to minimize the waste from this game.  Volunteers will work in the parking lots and in the stadium to educate the fans while facilitating, sorting, and transporting as much recycling and composting as possible.  If you or your organization are interested in making a difference by volunteering at this event, please email Bart Bartels at bartelba@gvsu.edu.
