Risk Management

As with most forms of experiential learning in which student learning is to take place off-campus, service learning can entail different and heightened risks as compared with traditional classroom learning.  Additionally, because service learning activities often involve community partner agencies, questions regarding risk and liability can be especially complicated.  For these reasons, it is important that facilitators of service learning programs take appropriate measures to reduce risk and liability wherever possible.

The materials in this section provide some guidelines for effectively managing risk in service learning:

-Definitions of key terms

-Preliminary risk assessment of partner organization and service activities

-Signed service learning agreement with partner organization

-Signed service learning agreement and releases for students

-Comprehensive orientation and education for students

-Familiarity with relevant laws/regulations
