About
Professor Roos founded GVSU's Film & Video Program, originally offered through the William James College within The Grand Valley State Colleges. She joined academia from an award-winning career in public broadcasting, including both television and radio. She has been active without interruption in documentary and public service media production up to the present time. She was the recipient of the GVSU 2001 Teaching Excellence in Arts & Humanities Award. For many years, she served as Associate Director of the School of Communications.
During the past decade her teaching/media projects have focused on the Middle East. For example, Barb taught two summers in the History Department at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. She led a group of GVSU students on a month-long study visit to Egypt. She worked in conjunction with a group of Bedouin women in the Egyptian Sinai to produce video documents about their lives. Currently, she is engaged in a study of historical relationships between career and liberal education on the one hand and the "progressive education" movement on the other.
