Meet Our Staff:

Carl Brown

Most days you can find Director Carl Brown in the Speech Lab. If he is not doing paperwork, crunching numbers, or digging through research, he is likely chatting it up with the consultants. Carl is finishing his PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi and has been interested in the power of words for most of his life. He has been a competitive speaker, a debate coach, and a professor, but his favorite thing to do is, without question, lead the GV Speech Lab!

 Kelsey Hines

Lou Holtz said that, “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it,” which is what Kelsey, our Student Director, focuses on when faced with a challenge. Kelsey is currently in her fourth year at GV and is studying Communications with a minor in Speech-Language Pathology. When she isn’t watching Netflix, Kelsey enjoys rock climbing and partaking in GV’s Loud & Queer group on campus, but no matter where she is going, you can bet she has a cup of coffee in hand.

 Chad Rodgers

“What is free time?” Senior consultant Chad Rodgers keeps busy working on his double major in Film & Video and Advertisements/Public Relations. He considers his work his hobby, which is why you can catch him filming, pitching scripts, or heading up meetings with the Advertising Club on campus. If he could live anywhere in the world, Chad would live in Sicily, but he would never go a day without coffee. He’d love to have lunch with James Dean, but its Brad Pitt’s words in Fight Club that Chad identifies with, “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”

 Ari Zucker

Ari is a third-year Communication Studies Major who enjoys living by the famous words of Mae West, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”  If Ari could live anywhere in the world it would be Toronto Canada, even though his favorite sports team is the Detroit Red Wings. Ari couldn’t spend a day without his computer, unless he was traveling back in time to witness The First Continental Congress.

Ellen Packard

Pursuing an Advertising and Public Relations major with a minor in Business, not only makes Ellen a professional at communicating, but it also makes her an expert when it comes to Client based speeches. If she could witness any historical event, Ellen would have loved to have seen Woodstock. She would enjoy having lunch with soccer star David Beckham, which makes sense because if she could live anywhere it would be England. Come and say Ello, to Ellen today!

Kent Redford

When he’s not reading or running, Kent enjoys taking a step back from the action and watching some of his favorite sports teams like the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons. Working on his Advertising and Public Relations Major and Business Minor, Kent is no stranger to important meetings, which is probably why he would love to travel back in time to witness the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Kent wouldn’t stay in 1776 for long though, as he couldn’t go a night without his fan to put him to sleep.

Michelle Marinos

Michelle is a junior Advertising and Public Relations major with a minor in Business. Her first speech was a informative speech on Greek Weddings. In her free time she enjoys photography, dancing, baking, and watching too much Netflix. Michelle wouldn’t mind living in a big city, preferably New York or Paris, but if she could have lunch with anyone she would love to grab a simple burger and milkshake with a young John Travolta (aka Danny Zuko).

Chantal Shaw

Chantal is a junior Advertising and Public Relations major in the School of Communications. She is a lover of both cats and musical theater. She holds a leadership position in her sorority. Chantal is outgoing and can talk to anyone (or herself if necessary). Did we mention she likes cats?

Sam Showerman

Sam is a senior majoring in Communication Studies. When he’s not in the lab or the knowledge market he’s is riding his bike or hiking along the lakeshore…or eating chocolate. He plans to move to Oregon, once he graduates, and open a bike shop. An avid philanthropist, Sam is always brainstorming ideas or participating in community events with his fraternity brothers to help his favorite charities.

Alvin Dann, Jr.

What’s to not like about Alvin?  Alvin originates from the west side of Detroit, and is a senior majoring in Communication Studies.  Constantly reminded of his great voice, he enjoys meeting new people and speaking.  His interests are mainly gaming and sports, and he actually has a radio show with GVSU’s WCKS The Whale Radio organization.  Overall, Alvin aspires for greatness in the future and to give back.

Alec Schlitt

Alec is a junior in pursuit of a Marketing Degree form the Seidman School of Business.  He really has a passion for speaking and the power of words in this world. He is a lover of photography and just being artistic whenever he can. You will most likely see him around campus with his camera in hand looking for pictures wherever he goes. Also, be aware that he will use some kind of bad dad joke whenever he can.

Ashley Rapp

Ashley is a sophomore majoring in Psychology with a minor in Women and Gender Studies. Her interest in public speaking began in the third grade when she began to recite poems for family, teachers, and friends. When she's not in the Lab, you can find her volunteering with her sorority, thinking about Chipotle, or listening to Taylor Swift. She would love to work with you on any speech or presentation, so be sure to stop in and say hello!
