Student Organizations - Covid-19 Policies and Resources

Involvement is critical to student success on campus. The Office of Student Life is working with our many student organizations and will be providing risk assessment tools to ensure safety. We will adjust our program offerings to minimize transmission or contraction of COVID-19 while still promoting student engagement and fun.

Student Organizations

On campus student organization in person meetings and events are permitted. If hosting an in person meeting or event, student organizations are required to utilize the Event Pass check-in tool, in the event there is a need to conduct contact tracing. Events taking place off campus and student organization travel are not permitted at this time.

Virtual participation options for members who are not comfortable attending a face to face meeting are recommended. Any meetings with a requirement that members must attend should have a virtual option.

GVSU is committed to the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff.  Due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and increased risks associated with travel, GVSU has prohibited all non-essential travel (source: Lakers Together Handbook). 

Travel guidance for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) follows the above-mentioned university policy.  Because RSO travel is considered non-essential to the university’s operations, it will not be permitted for the duration that the university travel prohibition is in place. RSOs are defined as student organizations registered through the Office of Student Life including Club Sports organizations administered by the department of Recreation & Wellness. Exceptions to this are rare and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Student Life Risk Management Committee in consultation with university leadership.  Please contact Bri Slager in the Office of Student Life ([email protected]), to submit a request for your travel exception to be reviewed.

Student organizations will be permitted to make reservations on campus, however new room capacity reductions will severely restrict the number of members who can be in a space for face to face meetings.

Campus room usage priorities are as follows: 1. Academic needs 2. Co-curricular and extra-curricular event space 3. General meeting requests.

Club Sports are student organizations and must adhere to all of the policies listed on this web page.  Club Sports must also adhere to the "Club Sports Return to Play" guidelines created by Recreation and Wellness.

In accordance with Michigan's executive orders: theater, singing, and dance activities with a face to face audience are currently suspended.

  • Practices should be held with strict physical distancing, face covering/face shield use, and no physical touching; practices should be held virtually when possible.
  • Consider the use of outdoor space for practices or performances where members and others can appropriately physically distance.
  • Follow room capacity requirements and seek the largest space available if you must practice indoors.

We also strongly recommend following the guidelines provided by the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science

The Creation Station located in Kirkhof 0008 will be open week days during business hours for student organization usage. This space provides items like construction paper, stamps, cut outs, and other crafting supplies for your poster board or advertising needs.  


Community Service Learning Center (CSLC)

 All students are asked to comply with local, state and federal government public health guidelines. If you are interested in exploring remote or virtual service options, see our   Community Engagement Opportunities  webpage.

Please see our website and social media for opportunities to volunteer and donate blood on campus and at drives nearby.

Due to the university travel ban, student organizations are not permitted to travel as a group for off campus service opportunities. Organizations should try to work with non-profit organizations to provide service opportunities and projects for your groups that utilize on campus spaces. 



Support Services

Room Reservations, Kirkhof Center, Event Services

Face coverings must be combined with social distancing, hand washing, self assessments, and a requirement to stay home when ill (even with mild symptoms), to have the best opportunity to reduce risk. Everyone is responsible for keeping the GVSU campus safe.

Based on the university and state guidelines for reducing risk and promoting safe environments, our event spaces have been reconfigured. Refer to our website for new space capacities (Russel H. Kirkhof Center, Cook-DeWitt Center).

Yes, space is limited and the tables must be reserved. Please contact event services to make a reservation. Only one individual may be present tabling on behalf of your organization at a time. 


Promotions Office

You can get posters approved and stamped at the Office of Student Life front desk (KC 1110), if you'd like to post yourself for free.
