Member Organizations

In the Stuey organization listing (www.gvsu.edu/studentlife/stuey), all groups classified "Honorary & Professional" are members of the Council.

What is the Honorary/Professional Society Council?

During the 2099-10 fiscal year, the Student Organization Funding process was revised. Rather than allocating annual budgets, the Senate allocates annual funds to Student Organization Councils. This procedure also provides funds for campus programming to selective membership organizations such as Honorary/Professional Societies, which did not have access to funds in the past.

Each Council will meet regularly and grant funds to member organizations on a program-by-program basis. The Honorary/Professional Society Council was allocated $7,000 for the 2012-13 fiscal year. The Council may also request additional funds from the Student Senate through the Reserve Request process.

It is understandable that some Presidents may not be able to attend scheduled Council meetings, however a student representative must attend. An organization may send multiple representatives, however a minimum of one student from each organization must attend. Each member organization will receive one vote on Council business. Attendance is essential for organizations to receive funding from Student Senate.

Advisors may attend, however, a student must attend to represent the organization.

Agenda Items include (but are not limited to):

  • Attendance and Registration Status of Member Organizations

  • Purpose/Structure of the Council and Future Meeting Schedule

  • Funding Processes for Student Organizations

  • Budget Process and Current Allocations

  • Updates and Opportunities

Any organization classified as "Honor Society" or "Professional Fraternity" is expected to participate. PLEASE NOTE: SOME ORGANIZATIONS WERE MOVED TO THIS CATEGORY BASED ON A REVIEW OF MISSION STATEMENTS. Our definition of “Honor Society" or "Professional Fraternity” is "Organizations with selective membership practices for the purpose of either recognizing student achievement or providing fellowship for students with particular professional interests."

If you feel your organization is NOT selective in any way and should be placed in a different classification and Council, please discuss with Michelle Burke.

Please direct questions or concerns to Michelle Burke, Council Advisor at burkemi@gvsu.edu or 331-2358.
