Some things to keep in mind while planning your coursework:

Required Courses
There is no absolute list of required courses for persons seeking admission to veterinary school.  Some schools have more specific requirements than others. Careful consultation with your faculty advisor throughout the undergraduate program is strongly advised.
Biology Major Pre-veterinary Medicine Emphasis
Students preparing for careers as veterinarians may major in biology. Biology majors with a pre-veterinary emphasis should complete the following:

  • CHM 116
  • CHM 241
  • CHM 242
  • CHM 461
  • PHY 220
  • PHY 221
Students must have competency in college algebra and trigonometry (MTH 122 and MTH 123) and must choose biology electives from the following:
  • BIO 222
  • BIO 232
  • BIO 302
  • BIO 303
  • BIO 352
  • BIO 375/376
  • BIO 422
  • BIO 432
  • HS 212
  • HS 213
Completion of the biology degree and emphasis fulfills all the Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine course requirements for admisson in the professional program.  In addition, MSU requires applicants to accumulate a minimum of 240 hours of contact with the veterinary profession as well as substantial experience with animals, both small and large. Early consultation with the pre-vet advisor (Dr. Terry M. Trier, triert@gvsu.edu) is strongly encouraged.
