About
Contemporary Ceramics Association was started by the Intermediate Ceramics Throwing class in winter 2007. A majority of the students were also Art Education majors, Ceramic majors, or involved in community. Many of us had also been involved with conducting workshops for k-12 at GVSU, and became members of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), going to Kentucky for their Conference to learn more about ceramics and education. As a result, to continue these activities, and to provide more opportunity for others, non-majors, non-students, and as a way of learning and experiencing with a group of people, the organization was formed.
It is our interest to invite members from a broad range of majors. Everyone will be able to contribute a unique aspect to the club, and non-art/ceramic majors will be able to learn the ceramic arts in studio, as well as participate in all events/workshops/trips. Contemporary Ceramics Association opportunites are trips such as:
-The International Expositions of Scultpure Object and Functional Art (SOFA) at Navy Pier, Chicago
-National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Annual Conference, this year in Pheonix Az
-Michigan Mud, coming to Grand Rapids next year
We conduct workshops. And do projects such as: Empty Bowls
Also, members will be able to learn making techniques - wedging, throwing, handbuilding, firing, etc. along with using contemporary ideas; looking at current work from ceramicists that are functional, sculptural, and use of non-clay materials.
