If a fictional revolving door existed at Seidmans gate, CEO would be at its forefront, ushering in all non-business students looking to acquire the fundamentals of capitalism, and inspiring entrepreneurial-minded business students to experience the world using more than just margins and bottom lines. Trevor Pawl, President of the CEO 2004-2005 The C.E.O. is a non-profit student group that strives to provide distinctive, constant and effective aid for college students looking to become entrepreneurs of a certain craft. The organization does this by maintaining a reliable and knowledgeable executive board, and by bringing in prudent, experienced business leaders to clearly explain the nitty-gritty processes one has to work through to start and grow a successful enterprise. The C.E.O. at Grand Valley is part of a nationwide organization which highlights start-up business fundamentals and builds student interest in entrepreneurship by hosting speakers, attending national conferences, providing instruction on how to write a business plan, touring the facilities of local corporations, and engaging in new product development projects. The C.E.O. has also participates in several community volunteer efforts with the Grand Rapids Jaycees, Big Brother/Big Sister, Junior Achievement, and the American Cancer Society. The C.E.O. finds itself in a unique position amidst the network of student organizations within the Seidman College of Business. While the Investment Portfolio Club caters to mostly finance majors, and the American Marketing Association targets mostly marketing majors; CEO can focus on all aspects of business, thus drawing from a larger pool of students. While still encouraging business majors to utilize the specified tactics taught within Seidman, (and maximize their earnings potential) CEO is also able to market art majors who want to open art galleries, engineers who dream of owning a design firm, or computer science majors who visualize what it would be like to start-up a software company. This diversification of membership allows CEO to accrue more knowledge spillover benefits within the group. An accounting student may learn something about biology that could prove useful in the future, or engineering major may pick a leadership characteristic displayed by one of the management majors in the group. The organization is also continuously attempting to grow the amount of value-added resources it can tap for support on campus and in the community. The skills CEO teaches extend far beyond just one area of interest, thus offering a more unique platter of connections and opportunities for Grand Valleys entire student body to choose from. That is the CEO competitive advantage.
