Growing butterflies and skills

Carissa Patrone, second from left, was named intern of the year.

Carissa Patrone had an internship that allowed her to grow wings.

Patrone was named Outstanding Intern of the Year by Career Services for her work with Michigan Butterflies. The Grand Rapids company researches and raises monarch butterflies and supplies them to area zoos and other organizations.

During her internship, Patrone, a double major in advertising/public relations and Spanish, said she had many opportunities to enhance the marketing of Michigan Butterflies. She created a logo, media kit and brochures; placed advertisements on Craigslist; and managed its social media content.

Patrone continues to work as an intern for Michigan Butterflies. She will graduate in 2012. "I love working for the Michigan Butterflies because it is so different and I have met some really amazing people," she said.

Rachel Becklin, assistant director of Career Services, said Patrone was chosen as intern of the year because "she showed initiative, went above and beyond, and made an overall positive impact on the organization."
