Graduate Teacher Certification (GTC)

Are you interested in becoming a certified teacher?

For those who already hold a bachelors degree, but are looking to make a career change...

The Graduate Teacher Certification (GTC) program is an intensive, post-baccalaureate route to initial teacher certification - for those who do not yet have a teaching certificate. This full-time program consists of accelerated content and teacher preparation coursework that will prepare teacher candidates for elementary or secondary certification within the State of Michigan. As part of the GTC program, teacher candidates will also engage in two semester-long clinical experiences. Under the guidance and supervision of an experienced mentor teacher, teacher candidates will practice leading a classroom while gaining the necessary knowledge and skillset to be an effective teacher. Upon successful completion of this educator preparation program (EPP), Grand Valley will recommend teacher candidates to the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to be issued their license.

Program Testimonial

"For my interview, I researched and planned an actual PBL and presented it to the principal and other staff over Skype. They were very impressed with my preparation and knowledge. I have GVSU and the entire Graduate Teacher Certification program staff to thank for all of that. Even after attending the New Teacher Academy, I realized that somehow I was a step ahead although I was a brand-new teacher. I can’t thank you and the rest of the staff with the GTC program at GVSU enough for preparing me for being at this wonderful campus with this amazing district."
