Theatre at Grand Valley presents

Restoration Comedy

Written by Amy Freed

Directed by Kiara Pipino

March 20 - 29, 2015

This production contains "adult situations and language". Parental discretion is advised.

Tickets are on sale now!

Based on comedies of the late 1600s, Loveless, an insatiable womanizer, returns to England after squandering his own fortune. Now he intends to spend his wife’s fortune after he hears she has died. But when Amanda learns that her husband is alive, she begins her plotting. With the help of her husband’s friend, Worthy, she pretends she is a lascivious mistress and tempts her husband into her bed. While the two repair their broken marital bonds, Amanda breaks Worthy’s heart in the process. Following typical restoration comedies that were once banned, the Restoration Comedy characters all chase the joys of love and debauchery.

GVSU Theatre Trip 2014

Stratford

Twenty two Theatre students accompanied by Jim Bell and Karen Libman attended the production of The Beaux’ Stratagem at the Stratford Festival. This fall, professor Bell is teaching a class on Restoration Comedy Dramaturgy that coincides with the upcoming production of Restoration Comedy in April. Restoration Comedy is an adaptation of two Restoration period comedies-Loves Last Shift and The Relapse . The Dramaturgy class is an intensive study of the nature of Restoration period comedies including reading numerous examples. But in theatre seeing is always believing. As such, the opportunity to see a Restoration comedy performed by a professional company was too good to pass up. Half of the students who attended were from Bell’s Dramaturgy class and read the play in preparation. The production was outstanding and very much enjoyed by all. The Grand Valley Theatre students were an exemplary and enthusiastic audience. The stars aligned in that the production closed on October 11 with a Saturday matinee. This allowed the group to see the production after the close of the Shakespeare Festival that would have conflicted for many of the students, and allowed the group to travel to see the production and return in one day, saving on costs.
