Consider Being a Transitions Leader

Transitions Leaders are undergraduate students who welcome new students to GV while educating them about the mission, vision, & values of the university. Transitions Leaders use their personal experiences & their own transition to university life while working with their first-year students. Transitions Leaders will be paid a one-time $250 stipend after successfully completing all required job responsibilities.

Transitions Leader Job Description

TRANSITIONS LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION

 Responsibilities – approximately 20 hours in August 2022 with a paid stipend of $250.

  • Prior to TL Training in August 2022 (approx. 3 hours)
  • Be responsive to Go Team Member and Transitions Staff
  • Attend all scheduled virtual meetings/trainings (Date TBD)
  • Complete online training modules (including the student Transition modules) and other training requirements

Transitions Training (approx. 4 hours)

Attend training on Tuesday, August 23rd from 1-5pm.  Resident Assistant unavailable during this time due to move-in will attend an alternate training date the week of August 15th scheduled in coordination with Housing and Residence Life. 

Transitions Program August 24-26, 2022
Facilitate small group meetings, lead students to and attend Transitions Programming, and assist with staffing Transition events/programming. You will not be expected to work during all of the hours we are asking you to be available during the Transitions Program, you will work in shifts. The Transitions Program is still being constructed and will be solidified by July 1, 2022. Transition Leader Applicants must be available during the following times:

·       Wednesday August 24th 2pm to 11pm

·       Thursday August 25th 8am to 11pm

·       Friday August 26th 8am to 11pm

Extended Transitions Program (Optional)

Student Life will be piloting an extended orientation program for commuter/non-residential students during the Fall 2022 semester.  TLs would continue to communicate with groups and engage in group activities.  An additional stipend will be provided (approximately 1 hour per week). 

Conduct & Behavior

1.  Uphold the mission & values of Grand Valley State University

2.  Serve as a positive role model to first-year students, focusing on student success

3.  Positively represent the University and encourage broad utilization of resources, experiences, etc. (e.g. do not endorse any one group or organization within it) 

4.  Create a welcoming environment that is equitable and inclusive for all student participants

5.  Be punctual and professional 

Assessment & Required Forms

Complete hiring paperwork by the deadline in order to receive the stipend.

Maintain accurate attendance records of group participants during in-person meetings.

Complete a Transition Leader evaluation of the program


Qualifications & Ideal Traits

1.  Be a currently enrolled, returning full-time undergraduate student at Grand Valley State University

2.  Personality traits: Embraces diversity, outgoing, articulate, friendly, resourceful, takes initiative, responsible, organized, empathetic, creative, team player

3.  GVSU specific traits: pride in the University, knowledgeable about campus resources

4.  Preferred skills: facilitation and public speaking skills, detail-oriented, communication, team-building, passionate about the success of first year students and GVSU
