Project Information

After the Rogue River Watershed Management Plan was produced in 2000, the Annis Water Resources recieved funding for two implementation projects.  These projects included installation of best management practices (BMP's) on problem areas identified in the Management Plan and an information and education project which was based in the Information and Education Strategy developed for the Rogue River Watershed Management Plan.  These projects ended in 2004.  Below is a summary of the activities and tasks performed for these projects.

Physical Improvements Program

bank erosionThe overall goal of the physical improvements program was to protect the coldwater and warmwater fisheries from degradation by restoring existing areas of substantial erosion and sediment runoff and recreating natural riparian buffers. AWRI helped to decrease sediment and thermal pollution in the watershed by improving road/stream crossings, stabilizing a portion of streambank along the Rogue River, and recreating a vegetative buffer. This program aimed at adressing the sites that are sources of severe sediment loading and extreme temperature fluctuations. The Newaygo County Road Commision, the Kent County Road Commission and Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited partnered with us to construct the Best Management Practices.

education activityInformation and Education Program (I/E)

The goal of the I/E program was to increase the involvement of the community in watershed protection activities through awareness, education, and action. AWRI worked with both the users of resources within the watershed and local decision-makers within and outside the watershed. It was our hope that activities such as educational workshops, biological monitoring events, stream clean-ups, and watershed fairs would increase awareness of what human impacts can do to a watershed. The Center for Environmental Study, the Grand Valley Metro Council, the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited, and the West Michigan Environmental Action Council participated with AWRI on the activities mentioned above.
