How to be a Good Intern

Once you have secured an internship, it’s important to make the most out of it! Here are a few ways to do this:

Be professional

  • Always show up on time (if not a little early)
  • Dress according to the organization’s standards (if you don’t know what they are - ask)
  • Know and adhere to the organization’s web and technology policies (i.e., cell phone, iPod, and Facebook use)
  • Maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude

Be a human sponge - this is a learning experience after all

  • Ask a lot of questions
  • Volunteer to attend professional development opportunities/meetings/events
  • Ask for and apply feedback from supervisors and co-workers
  • Take good notes

Continue networking

  • Make an effort to meet people outside the area you’re working in
  • Introduce yourself to senior leadership
  • Connect with other interns

As a reminder, when you are completing an internship, you are still a GVSU student and representing GVSU in the broader community. The student code of conduct still applies.
