It is the police department’s intent to encourage responsible use of telecommunications devices and service providers. There are steps that you can take to minimize unwanted communication before they even happen. Some of the unwanted communication from businesses, marketers, or spammers is particularly easy to prevent.
• Threatening physical harm or damage to any person or property.
• Falsely and deliberately reporting a person has been injured, has suddenly taken ill, has suffered death, or has been the victim of a crime or an accident.
• Using vulgar, indecent, obscene, or offensive language or suggesting any lewd or lascivious act in the course of a conversation or message.
• Repeatedly initiating a telephone call and, without speaking, deliberately hanging up or breaking the telephone connection as or after the telephone call is answered.
• Making an unsolicited commercial telephone call between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. “An unsolicited commercial telephone call” means a call made by a person or recording device, on behalf of a person, corporation, or other entity, soliciting business or contributions.
• Deliberately engaging or causing to engage the use of a telecommunications service or device of another person in a repetitive manner that causes interruption in telecommunications service or prevents the person from utilizing his or her telecommunications service or device.
• Contact the police to report inappropriate telecommunication
• Save any written emails, texts, caller identification displays, or voice messages
• Keep record of the communications what was said, date, time, witnesses, your location, etc.
• Note the callers voice characteristics and attempt to describe
• Discontinue the contact and do not engage the caller in communication
• Never give out your personal information to an unidentified source
Preventing Unwanted Calls and Text Messages
• Keep your cell phone number private. Provide it only to those individuals you trust
• Be wary of downloads on your cell phone. Use trusted sites only.
• Look for check boxes indicating that you are giving permission for further marketing contacts
• Signing up for the "Do Not Call Registry" should be your first step to minimize unwanted communications. You can register your number at DoNotCall.gov.
• Never open any unwanted text messages or respond to them in any way. Either delete them or forward them to the FTC at firstname.lastname@example.org.
• Work to prevent phishing operations from discovering your e-mail address and number. Use an e-mail address that would be hard to guess, use both letters and numbers in it
