Striving and Thriving at GVSU (Top)
As the semester begins, now is the perfect time to set academic goals and identify campus resources at GVSU that can help you to get the most out of your classes. We will discuss myths about college learning and share the 5 characteristics of Thriving students.
Power Study Strategies for Deep and Active Learning (Top)
Most students know that in order to get good grades, outside study time is important. What many students don’t know is what to do to make that study time effective. We will share “The Power Hour” study technique that will help you focus your study time so that you learn more and spend less time staring at your book
wondering where to begin.
Time Management – Tips for Taking Control (Top)
Balancing personal, professional and academic commitments, along with spending time with family and friends, can be a challenge. Developing your own system of organization and time management will help you be in control of your life and learning. You will assess your current approach and identify strategies that you can put in place immediately to help you achieve your goals and improve your effectiveness.
Academic Optimism (Top)
Having an optimistic perspective can improve your chances of success in college and in life. This workshop will explore the role of Optimism in academic problem-solving and dealing with challenges of college life. Strategies for developing an optimistic mind-set will be explored and you will identify thoughts and behaviors that may be getting in the way of you reaching your potential.
Tests: Preparing, Performing and Planning for Progress (Top)
Doing your best on tests/exams requires a plan. Each course and each exam is different and successful test performance is a process that begins way before the test is given and continues after the test is over. This workshop will discuss the three stages of test-taking and help you establish a test preparation plan that you can use in each of your courses. The time to start preparing for your next exam is NOW!
Best Tips for Effective Reading and Notetaking (Top)
Having effective reading and note-taking strategies are key components to your academic success at GVSU. Students often struggle with the volume of reading expected as well as how to stay focused while reading and during class lectures. This workshop will provide practical tips and techniques to help you become a scholarly reader and an effective notetaker.
From Procrastination to Motivation (Top)
If procrastination is getting in the way of your academic success, this workshop will help you identify your source of procrastination and learn strategies to increase your motivation to get your work done. We can’t motivate you – but you can! We will discuss action steps that you can take to turn your procrastination into motivation and your self-doubt into self-confidence.
U-Connect: Communicating with Professors (Top)
Professors are an important partner in your education and they are people too! Understanding how to effectively communicate with them is an important part of reaching academic and professional goals. How to start conversations, ask for what you need, discuss your grades without being disrespectful and getting their feedback will all be covered in this workshop. Basic conflict resolution, non-verbal messages and sending
effective e-mails will be covered.
Stressed about Tests? (Top)
Tests can cause stress and anxiety levels to rise, even in the very best students. Test Anxiety occurs when your feelings of anxiety interfere with your ability to recall previously learned information during a testing situation. Students will assess their own level of anxiety and identify strategies to deal with the stress that comes with taking tests. Campus resources will be shared.
There’s Apps for That! (Top)
Did you know that there are Apps that can help you study? Come to our workshop to find out about free Apps that can help make learning easier for you. Be sure to bring your laptop, i-pad, or smart phone device to try them out!
A Final Exam Plan for Low Stress and High Success (Top)
Procrastination may be your middle name, but don’t wait until a week (or a few days) before the final to begin your preparation! At this workshop, we will discuss test-taking tips and strategies specifically relating to final exams. Final exams can cause stress and anxiety levels to rise, even in the very best students. Come and identify strategies to deal with the stress that comes with taking tests.
