Location:

Description:

Starting with the last decades of the 19th century, and through the start of the First World War, the European musical world was dominated by the late romantic aesthetics and increasingly dramatic chromaticisms of Wagner and Strauss.   In Paris, however, a conscious search for national identity led composers to experiment with more coloristic melody and harmony; a poetic approach to music that mirrored the free, non-accentual character of the French language.   French composers also turned backwards in time, resurrecting once again the unique beauty and sonority of wind instruments that was so much a part of the Classical Era in music. The distinctive sounds, reminiscent of the late 18th Century woodwind serenade and divertimento, once again echoed through the great concert halls and salons of Western Europe as the 19th Century ended and the 20th Century began.
