The Grand Valley Dance Ensemble Spring Concert will feature diverse music and student dancers during two performances, March 22-23, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theater, Performing Arts Center, on the Allendale Campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

A modern dance, “Yours and Mine” is set to the music of Shaker melodies, by Julie Blume, guest choreographer-in-residence and former principal dancer with modern dance Parsons Dance Company in New York City.

An original work, “College,” is set by guest choreographer-in-residence Charles Askegard, artistic director of Ballet Next and former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet. He uses the experiences of the dancers as students as inspiration and set the piece to the music of Michael Nyman.

Dance faculty member Shawn T Bible set “We Walk. Camp. Walk” to the music of Olafur Arnalds. Inspiration for the piece came from the book “Pushing the Bear” by Diane Glancy and various other historical accounts related to the American tragedy of Trail of Tears. The cast features nine male dancers who represent the Cherokee men as they are led from their land.
