Anthropology's Dr. VanWormer will be teaching a special interest class on the anthropology of intentional communities. There are no prerequisites for this course. Any and all majors welcome. Fulfills the cultural elective for anthropology majors.
Class Description:
Ever think about why people join intentional communities, communes, ‘cults’, or other types of alternatives? Ever say ‘there must be a different way to do this’? Ever wonder what impact social movements have on our society? Then this class is for you!!!
During the semester we will learn about the social, economic, and political context of intentional communities. The materials will include a large survey of both historic and contemporary communities as we examine what factors go into their founding, their longevity, and their ending. Course activities will include guest lectures and fieldtrips.
