CLOSED: Job Opening - Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences

The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Grand Valley State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank starting August 6, 2023.  Applicants will be expected to teach human physiology courses and associated labs.  We are interested in new and emerging fields that can contribute to diversifying the expertise in our department, specifically around physiology. The successful candidate will have research and teaching interests with the potential to engage the West Michigan community. We are especially interested in candidates from under-represented groups and individuals who have experience working with diverse student and community populations.

Required Qualifications and Education: Qualified applicants will be committed to both classroom teaching and research involving undergraduate and graduate students. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required for this position, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy. The successful candidate must have obtained a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a science or health-related field from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered for a two-year contract with provision that the Ph.D. must be completed by December 2024.

Preferred Qualifications and Education: Faculty area of research emphasis may be diverse, and postdoctoral experience is preferred. Candidates should also have a strong commitment to mentoring students under-represented in higher education, and/or experience using inclusive pedagogies, and/or scholarship.

Responsibilities: Tenure-track duties include a 9-contact hour teaching load per semester, as well as scholarship/research productivity with students, and professional/public service. The primary teaching duties for this position will be in the area of integrated physiology courses, although faculty may teach in other areas of expertise as well. The option to teach in the summer months is also ordinarily available but not required for the position.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications.  Startup funds for research are available.

Department/College:  The Biomedical Sciences Department has approximately 900 undergraduate majors and 44 full-time faculty members. It also has an expanding Master’s degree program with both thesis and non-thesis students. We offer a variety of courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, nutrition and neurosciences that support our Biomedical Sciences majors, as well as courses that support other health science majors, the university’s general education program, and select graduate programs.  Along with our primary teaching and research facilities, a science building was recently completed to support further laboratory opportunities for students and faculty, including a vivarium, an aquatic facility, plastination lab, and microscopy suite with a confocal microscope.  For more information, see http://www.gvsu.edu/bms and https://www.gvsu.edu/clas/labresource/.
