A movie about making a movie, Even the Rain gives us Mexican filmmakers intending to tell an authentic story about Christopher Columbus' brutal encounter with the indigenous in Hispanolia. But they set the film just outside Cochabamba, in land-locked Bolivia, where they become embroiled in protests by locals against the privatization of water. Even the Rain is a wry commentary on the globalized film industry, a critique of how we tell histories, and a painful reminder that the tragedies of the past remain with us today. A must-see for those interested in human rights, Latin America, and globalization.
