W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellows Program
W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship Program at GVSU results in a Master of Education in Instruction and Curriculum with an Emphasis in Secondary Level Education and secondary certification in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics or earth/space science.
Applicants to this program apply on-line, are interviewed, and recommended to the university by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. Accepted applicants enter GVSU'S unique cutting-edge teacher education program specifically designed to prepare secondary mathematics and science teachers who are skilled in meeting the needs of students in Michigan's high need secondary schools. Throughout their intensive, year-long teacher education program, Fellows will participate in clinical experiences in the Grand Rapids, Godfrey Lee, and Muskegon Public Schools.
This Experimental Option for the Master of Education in Instruction and Curriculum with an Emphasis in Secondary Level Education combined with Secondary Certification and Endorsement in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Earth/Space Science regularly undergoes minor program changes in response to Fellows needs. The program includes 28 credits prior to certification and 9 additional credits to complete the M.Ed. degree. In addition to coursework, the program requires involvement in clinical settings throughout the program. It also requires successfully passing of the Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification in basic skills and endorsement content, as well as other clinical and certification requirements e.g. background checks, bloodborne pathogen training, TB tests, volunteer hours, first aid and CPR training.
Summer Coursework
Summer coursework in addition to program orientation, taking and passing the MTTC tests, background checks, other requirements and clinical placements during the first summer in the program includes:

- EDG 680 - Special Topics in Education (1 to 3 credits): Facilitating Learning Environments A (2)
- EDG 680 - Special Topics in Education (1 to 3 credits): Connecting Curriculum, Assessment, & Instruction A (3)
- EDG 601 - Content/Curriculum Workshops (1 to 3 credits): Content/Curriculum Workshops: Content for Teaching (1)
Fellows must take and pass the MTTC basic skills and content tests, and complete background checks, TB tests, bloodborne pathogen training, 25 hours of volunteer work in diverse settings, and summer coursework in order to continue into the fall semester course and clinical work.

Winter Coursework
Winter coursework in addition to full time clinical placements in partner district secondary schools includes:

- EDG 685 - Practicum/Graduate Field Experience (3 or 6 credits) B: Secondary Education (6)
During the winter semester, Fellows will take first aid and CPR training. After successfully completing the coursework, certification requirements, and gaining positive recommendations from clinical settings, Fellows will apply for Michigan Secondary Teaching Certification.
Second Spring/Summer Session Coursework
Fellows will take two courses (5 credits) during the second spring/summer semester toward their master's degree.

Second Year Coursework
In the second year of the program, it is anticipated that Fellows will begin their employment as mathematics or science teachers in Michigan's high need secondary schools. During that school year, Fellows will take one course and be part of the 3-year GVSU induction mentoring program.
- ED 680 - Special Topics in Education (1 to 3 credits): Action Research (1)
Master's Project or Thesis
After completing their first year of teaching, Fellows will complete their master's project or thesis which completes their master's degree.
Additional Requirements
During the first three (3) years of teaching Fellows will participate in a mentoring program coordinated by GVSU, as well as the program of the employing school or district.
