MUS 231 - Music Theory IV

A study of post-1900 musical techniques: extended chromatic and higher-numbered harmonies, their use and resolutions, including those in jazz and pop music. Study of non-tertian harmonies, bi-tonality, use of pitch sets, and serialism. Notation and reading of contemporary scores. Analysis of selected jazz improvisation. Required of music majors. Offered winter semester. Prerequisite: MUS 230.
