Student Services
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Center
The CLAS Academic Advising Center serves as a key resource for students pursuing majors and/or minors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and for Grand Valley's Exploratory Study (undecided) students. The goal is to complement faculty advising with professional advising services and serve students by
- providing initial academic advising through first-year, transfer, and international student advising and registration sessions;
- assisting in the development of an achievable academic plan;
- sharing resources and opportunities for exploration of academic options;
- disseminating Grand Valley policies and procedures as they pertain to degree completion in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences;
- offering a central location for students seeking information on preprofessional programs such as premedical, predental, prepharmacy studies, and many other postbaccalaureate programs;
- assisting students interested in attaining teacher certification through the undergraduate programs or the graduate teacher certification program, as well as current teachers seeking an additional endorsement in a CLAS-related area; and
- providing support for nontraditional students and students returning to Grand Valley after an absence.
The CLAS Academic Advising Center's location is C-1-140 and C-1-120 Mackinac Hall and can be reached by calling (616) 331-8585. Additional information also can be found on the center's website at gvsu.edu/clasadvising.

Tutoring and Reading Center (TRC)

The Tutoring and Reading Center at Grand Valley is two academic support programs housed conveniently in one location.
The Tutoring Center provides scheduled individual and small group peer tutoring free of charge. Subject-specific tutoring is offered for many 100- and 200-level courses and a select number of upper-level courses in-person and online. Students can schedule as needed or recurring weekly sessions to encourage their success by providing a collaborative learning environment where students feel safe asking questions, clarifying materials, and learning study strategies from students who have successfully completed the course. Appointments are available in Navigate.
The Reading Center is a multidisciplinary support center that offers appointment and drop-in reading and comprehension strategies and support from peer tutors. Reading Center tutors are extensively trained in reading strategies across all content areas. The Reading Center also offers content-specific reading workshops for STEM students to help them manage heavy reading loads and retain more information when they study. The Reading Center offers support in-person and online for ease of access. Students can make appointments in Navigate or drop in when the center is open.
Drop-in Tutoring
Created in July 2004, CLAS is the largest of Grand Valley's colleges and offers more than 50 bachelor's degrees (and a growing number of advanced degrees) in the natural and mathematical sciences, the humanities, the fine and performing arts, and the social sciences.
All Grand Valley undergraduates build the foundation for their major studies in general education courses offered by our college.

Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) and Peer-assisted Study Sessions (PASS)
SLA and PASS offer an embedded tutoring approach to typically challenging courses. Students who select an SLA section of a course are required to attend additional weekly study and practice workshops led by upper-level students who have been successful in the course. PASS facilitators provide optional content review sessions, exam practice, and/or group tutoring for PASS-identified courses. These student facilitators work closely with faculty members to provide direct assistance with course content and practice. For more information or to see a list of classes with SLA and PASS, please go to gvsu.edu/sla-pass.
