Progam Overview

The mission of the GVSU M.S.W. Program is to prepare advanced generalist social workers who enhance and sustain the welfare and wellbeing of the individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities of West Michigan, the state, the nation, and the world; and who further the goals of the University and of the social work profession in this region and beyond. This is accomplished through professional leadership, advancement of the social work field’s knowledge through research and evaluation, and a focus on diversity, social justice and human rights.

All M.S.W. Social Work classes, other than virtual classes, are held on the Downtown Grand Rapids, MI campus. with convenient student parking available.

Currently, GVSU does not offer an MSW degree that is fully virtual. In-person graduate classes typically meet 3:00-5:50pm and 6:00-8:50pm Mondays- Thursdays.

Information Sessions are held regularly (see the GVSU M.S.W. Admissions page) and are held virtually for convenient connections.

Curriculum Pathways

There are many pathways you can choose from that suit your goals and needs.

You should visit your faculty advisor to discuss your program of study before you first register. (Consult Banner to identify your advisor.) Return visits are encouraged, as updating your plan will likely be desirable as you progress through the program.

The MSW curriculum at GVSU is meant to provide a foundational curriculum and an advanced generalist social work curriculum that prepares graduates for autonomous social work practice that promotes social, economic and environmental justice and endeavors to address poverty and other social problems within individual, organizational and community contexts within, but not limited to, West and Northern Michigan and the state of Michigan.
