Preventing Storm Water Pollution ENS 305 students
Our project is focused on coming up with a system to implement rain gardens on campus, while educating students about their importance. Grand Valley already has rooftop gardens, so our group's focus would be on creating gardens to help with runoff water from parking lots. Not only would we be attempting to reduce Sediment, heavy metals, pathogens, and nutrients from getting into the waterways around GVSU, but we would also be attempting to educate Grand Valley students about sustainability with a visual representation of a rain garden. We will also be creating surveys for students to get a better understanding of their knowledge on storm water pollution. Community partners would include GVSU students and faculty, the Office of Sustainability, parking services, ground maintenance, West Michigan Environmental Action Council, and hopefully we can identify more as the project continues to grow. Reasons for engagement are for our ENS 305 section 01 group project and more importantly our group wants to spread awareness of the importance of storm water management. Our group consists of 3 students that are all in Environmental and Sustainability Studies.
