High school teacher academies explore education
November 05, 2024
On Monday, November 4, 2024, ninety-nine Michigan high school students attended GVSU’s 1st Teacher Academy Career Day. This event allowed high school students from Michigan teacher academy programs to learn about GVSU’s teacher education programs and network with faculty, staff, and students.
Students learned about the different Education Programs that GVSU offers and talked with Teacher Education faculty and staff throughout the day. In a panel discussion with current GVSU students, they asked GVSU juniors and seniors about what challenges and advice they have for future teachers. A GVSU resource fair outside Loosemore Auditorium also provided the high schoolers with information about campus resources, student organizations, and opportunities.
The event culminated in a celebration as twenty-one of the high school seniors who attended were presented with certificates formally admitting them into GVSU. Dr. B. Donta Truss, GVSU’s Vice President for Enrollment Development and Educational Outreach, attended and congratulated each of the students, welcoming them into GVSU and thanking them for their dedication to teaching.
Each participating high school program has an articulated credit agreement with GVSU. Their students earn GVSU college credit (EDF 115: Introduction to Education) through a teacher academy program that formally aligns with GVSU’s curriculum. Mike Eichberger in GVSU’s Office of the Provost is actively working on these direct credit partnerships, and this year students from four districts participated in the Teacher Academy Career Day:
- Kent Career Tech Center (KCTC) from Kent ISD.
- Careerline Tech Center (CTC) from Ottawa Area ISD.
- NorthEd (Northwest Education Services) from the Traverse City region.
- Zeeland Public Schools.
The event was a collaboration by GVSU’s Office of the Provost, the College of Education and Community Innovation, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, GVSU Career Center, and Admissions as each contributed to the coordination and funding.
