Visiting faculty member publishes book
Visiting Professor Daniel Knapper has published a new book, Pauline Style and Renaissance Literary Culture (Oxford University Press, 2023). The book is a critical history of Saint Paul’s rhetorical style in the Renaissance period, 1500-1700. It explores how European humanists used emerging methods of literary analysis to conceptualize Paul’s style in their biblical scholarship; and how, informed by such humanist scholarship, literary artists imitated Paul’s style in their plays, poems, and prose works. With analysis of works by Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, and others, Professor Knapper shows that Paul’s style developed into one of the most theoretically productive and artistically provocative styles of the Renaissance.
