Professor Masko presents at AATC conference
English Professors Amy Masko and Dawn Evans (retired), along with Statistics Professor Sango Otieno presented their paper, "College Reading 101: The Positive Impacts of Just One Course on College Reading Skills of Underprepared First Year Students" at the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum Annual Conference that was in Albuquerque, New Mexico in October 2021.
Their paper examined the impact on reading scores of first year college students enrolled in a college reading course, designed to teach students both reading across the curriculum and disciplinary literacy, and how to manage vast amounts of reading that is typically assigned in universities. The paper presents both statistical data and qualitative date to support the assertion that a college reading course improves students’ reading abilities by as much as 1-1.4 years in just one semester!
