Guest Artist recital: Chia-Ying Chan and David Brickle, piano duo

Dr. David Brickle 
Pianist David Brickle serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Milligan University teaching piano and music theory. David has performed widely throughout the continental United States, Puerto Rico, and internationally in Spain. He has appeared in a variety of broadcasts including National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” and ETV Radio’s “On the Keys.” David has been a featured guest artist in numerous concert series including the Lander University Emerging Keyboard Artist Series, Oklahoma Baptist University’s Digby Bell Memorial Recital, the Festival of Keys, the Southern Exposure Concert Series, the Wallace Community College International Artist Series, and the South Carolina Governor’s School Discovery Summer Music Program. He has also performed as a concerto soloist with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and as a keyboardist for the Chautauqua Music School Festival Orchestra. After winning first prize in the South Carolina MTNA competition two years in a row and receiving honorable mention at the southeastern division level, David has also twice been a finalist at the Chautauqua International Piano Competition. He performed in "The Best of Young Artists Chamber Music Concert" at the Roundtop Festival Institute after being selected as a winner during their annual chamber music competition in 2017. Most recently, he was selected as the winner of the Chapman/Neesen competition within the FSU graduate piano program. He and his wife, Marianna Brickle, have collaborated in many concerts and recitals as a violin and piano duo since 2007.

David completed his Doctor of Music degree in piano performance studying with Read Gainsford, and also the Specialized Study Program in Pedagogy of Music Theory at Florida State University. He holds a Master of Music degree in piano performance from FSU where he also taught secondary applied piano lessons to both graduate and undergraduate students as a Graduate Assistant in Teaching for the FSU College of Music. David also holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of South Carolina where he studied with Marina Lomazov.

As a teacher committed to education in the community, David has served as a music educator and collaborative pianist for over ten years. During the summer, he serves on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan, and has also been on the faculty of the MasterWorks Festival in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the FSU Summer Piano Institute and Piano Camp. David served as an adjunct instructor at Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama from 2018-2020. He has also appeared as a pianist and lecturer for other community organizations such as Classical Conversations, as a piano instructor for the Chautauqua Music Festival Open Enrollment program, and for two years as a piano instructor for the Thomasville Road Academy of the Arts in Tallahassee, Florida
 

Dr. Chia-Ying Chan
Pianist Chia-Ying Chan, originally from Taiwan, brings passion, vibrancy, sensitivity and creativity to her interpretations of classical music. She is an active soloist and chamber pianist, who has given solo performances and recitals across Taiwan, America and Europe, including at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Austurias (Spain); the Sala dei Notari (Italy); National Recital Hall (Taiwan); Carnegie Weill Hall (New York), and has been invited to perform at the Wiener Saal Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Chan has won top prizes in competitions such as the 2021 American Prize in Piano Performance (Second Prize), the 2019 21st Century Piano Commission Competition (Winner), the 2016 International Music Competition Salzburg Grand Prize (Frist Prize), the 2014 West Virginia University Keyboard competition (First Prize), and among others. Her accomplishments led her to live broadcast performances at Schubertiade in Chicago, a solo recital at the PianoForte Foundation in Chicago, and performances at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall.

Chan’s playing has been featured on radio stations, including The Grand FM 101 (Canada), WILL FM 90.9 (USA), Radio Taiwan International AM 1557 (Taiwan), and the IC Broadcasting Company FM 97.5 (Taiwan). Her recent noticeable appearance with orchestra includes performances with Sinfonia da Camera conducted by Ian Hobson, and with Kostroma Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Gershtein in Russia. Her debut solo album on Centaur Record label was recently released, receiving praise from the Classical Music Sentinel: “…. [Chan is] a highly sensitive artist… a musician to watch and follow…..”. 

Chan is co-founder of Amosa Duo with clarinetist Dr. Gary June. Recent engagements include recitals at various universities within the United States, and prominent venues in Taiwan. 

Chan is currently on faculty at Saginaw Valley State University. She has invited to give masterclasses in United States and Taiwan, and provide webinar series in China. In addition, she serves as vice-president at World Piano Teacher Association USA-Illinois, and co-chair at Chambana International Music Competition. Active as a competition adjudicator, he served on the jury of the Sinfonia da Camera Concerto Competition (Youth Category), The National Federation of Music Clubs Festival (Bloomington District), and others. During the summer, she serves on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan. She served as teaching assistant at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and chamber music and theory instructor at UIUC affiliated pre-college program. She received both Artist Diploma and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance and Literature from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Master of Music in Performance at Cleveland Institute of Music.
